So, there's a new Chinese singing competition show called "The City of Musicals" and Wang Zhuocheng was a competitor on it. Musical singers perform a song in groups of two or three - sometimes the song is an actual duet / group song, sometimes it's a solo that they're sharing - and then they'll get votes by the judges and the audience.
Wang Zhuocheng's first performance of a duet from "Romeo et Juliet" wasn't met with lots of enthusiasm - both he and his female duet partner were struggling a bit with the song and the emotions of it, but while his partner was saved, he did not get enough votes. So he had only one song left and also couldn't choose it himself. Instead, he had to choose between two songs that some "safe" singers had chosen, and he decided on the song from French musical "Mozart - L'Opera Rock", which meant he'd sing against Zheng Qiyuan.
Zheng Qiyuan is a "veteran" musical singer with a career spanning two decades as far as I could determine, so I guess this was at least a really good learning opportunity for Wang Zhuocheng.
The song they performed was "L'assasymphony", sung by Salieri in which he grapples with his rival Mozart's newest success and contemplates suicide. I didn't know the song and now that I've listened to the original French version, I'm not particularly enarmoured with it. I don't like the very tinny orchestra sound (sounds like no real instruments were ever in sight for this recording) and I also don't like the singer's voice all that much.
But! I've been listening to Zheng Qiyuan & Wang Zhuocheng's performance on repeat for the last several days! I find it fascinating, they're both really strong in this, the song is very dramatic, and their voices are amazing!
The performance is from episode 4, which in part has English subtitles. It seems they're still updating those, since they've now reached this performance but stop in the middle of it. I'm geussing the rest will be added soon.
I also highly recommend the performance of "Rebecca" from the same episode. Jiang Qianru and Chen Tian are both fantastic and the song itself is awesome, anyway!
