Wangji‘s punishment - thoughts

So, given that I haven‘t read the extras and haven‘t watched the drama, where things might be portrayed differently, what are your thoughts on Wangji's punishment? Specifically, did it happen with Lan Xichen‘s knowledge and/or consent?
I am of two minds about it. On the one hand I think Lan Xichen would do anything for his brother and probably bend or break rules for him. The Lan Elders probably knew or suspected this and might have gone behind his back, or left some specifics unclear by design.
On the other hand, as sect leader there are such high expectations of setting an example that he might have felt pressured to agree to such a harsh punishment to not be accused of favoritism.
All this is of course leaving out what Wangji himself said/thought about it.
