a question

I've only within the last couple of months discovered The Untamed, and am (re)watching on Netflix. I've done some research online, and read  meta by some other viewers and fans. I'm on my second rewatch, this time paying particular attention to relationships between the clans, and background relationships and negotiations between members of differing clans. Having background helps clarify some puzzling decisions and behaviors, and also reveals intensity and density of character and storylines I was unaware of on first watch. I'm at the point now when I've had a hard day and I just want pretty moving colors on my screen there are a few go-to episodes I can take out of context for just that sort of evening's entertainment. Or I can hew to the overarching series storyline and get dug in for the evening, watching behaviors and subtle exchanges to amplify my understanding of relationships. It's all delicious.

I do have a question. Netflix is suddenly glutted with pretty Chinese fantasy costume "period" series and movies, and more are available through other venues, as well. I've peeked a bit at one or two of them, and they have the same sort of glossy sheen, but underneath there doesn't appear to be a lot of substance. So my question is, how does one judge "quality" shows? I'm sure they exist. Or is The Untamed, or CQL, on its own plane, with the recent novel, the anime series, and so on sort of background that I'm assuming not every other fantasy series or show has.

That's a lot of assumption, and a lot of ignorance of the subject. So, any help and/or guidance would be appreciated. Thanks!
