My notes: I eyed this one suspiciously for a few weeks as it hopped up and down the tag with its chapter updates, because I thought the premise could either be executed brilliantly or horribly. Then my housemate recced a different story by the same author, and I gobbled it up, and went, "OH, they're GOOD." They are so good. My favourite things about these characters are how much they enjoy each other as intellectuals, how willing they are to challenge each other, and how damned hard they try to be good to and for each other. The first time Lan Wangji meets Wei Wuxian, they're 14, and Wei Wuxian is in the midst of stealing a Cloud Recesses shuttle. Years later, Wei Wuxian disappears in the middle of the Sunguard Campaign, taking the Wen refugees with him.
Lan Wangji, seeking answers, follows Wei Wuxian's trail of one-way transmissions across the Middle Kingdom System, and finds both the answers he seeks, and answers to questions he'd never thought to ask before.
My notes: The plot is gentle, but the breadth and depth of the physical space between WWX and LWJ, and the precariousness of their link, make the longing and tension visceral. And it finally breaks with one king hell of a kiss.Re: Top Five Epistolary

Or the obvious take where their swords are replaced by dragons, or contain dragon spirits or somesuch. Or what if there's a giant, legendary dragon slumbering in the Burial Mounds, which is why nobody dares enter? What if they used to be slaughtered for sport, like in Avatar: The Last Airbender?

Summary:
She halfway down the street still running before it occurs the Wen Qing to worry that the cultivators might recognize her. She’s been living in Yiling for thirteen years and never seen anyone from her old life. Well, if someone is hurt she has to help. It's been a long time and she looks different now.
Recently there’s been another spate of rumors about the cultivation world, something about another siege and the burial mounds and a strange temple in Yunmeng. But there’s always rumours about the Yiling Patriarch’s return, sometimes like now they feature her brother as well, but she’s learned not to pay attention -- it's never anything real. Her family is dead, but she has made a new life for herself here. A life where she heals people.
